My story
I have been listening to Invisibilia (sadly, RIP) for the past year back then, and was exposed to how research can turn into something so so fun and emotional. I got really uninspired by academic writing in law school but was hella' excited for the legal research I was involved in.
So, I started making my podcast with two other friends (it’s still out there!). After graduation and a year of teaching law in university, I transitioned completely as a podcast producer and audio journalist. Until this day, it’s still hard to explain what I do to my parents.
Welcome to this Secret Page! If you’re here, this is a page where I’ll be sharing a little more about how I got here.
My name is Tanita Rahmani and I go by Tanita or sometimes Tita. I didn’t grew up with much English (and generally didn’t know how language works as a kid), so I was convinced that Titanic was my name in English! This was a real discussion I had with my parents because I was about to move to Australia as a child. I’m an Indonesian who has lived in Australia, the UK, and now residing in New York City.
I quit my job as a lawyer and was about to start grad school in 2017, studying international law. I carried a portable Samson mic, a tripod and a pop filter in my suitcase because I told myself, I’m gonna make audio stories out of my research.
There wasn’t any ( or, a lot of) opportunities to do audio stories in Indonesia, but even more difficult to find a place that did the kind of audio stories that I wanted. So my colleague and I set up a podcast company to (learn how to) produce what we liked (It’s called In-depth Creative. I no longer work there, but they are still creating really cool shows! I’m so proud of the team.)
I moved to the States in 2021, initially for a fellowship at UnionDocs and produced a couple of shows for Campside Media. Now I’m excited to get my hands even dirtier in pitching, reporting and crafting audio stories!
